Outcome 1: explain the
structure and jurisdiction of the civil courts
The candidate will be able to:
- describe the
hierarchy of the civil courts ie House of Lords, Court of Appeal
High Court, County Court (including Small Claims Court)
- identify key court personnel and describe their main areas
of responsibility ie judges, barristers, solicitors, legal
executives
- describe the jurisdiction of the civil courts in relation
to debt matters ie small claims, multi and fast-track
- describe the track system and illustrate how allocation
works
- explain in outline the structure and purpose of the Civil
Procedure Rules (CPR)
- explain the overriding objective of the CPR
- describe the doctrine of precedent
within the civil court structure.
