Outcome 2: explain the principles of offences against the person

The candidate will be able to:

  • explain and define the offence of murder including elements of causation and malice aforethought
  • distinguish between murder and voluntary manslaughter outlining the elements of provocation, suicide pact and diminished responsibility under s2, s3 and s4 of the Homicide Act 1957
  • explain the offence of involuntary manslaughter and describe the key elements of gross negligence and constructive manslaughter
  • summarise the differences between voluntary and involuntary manslaughter
  • explain the key components of a range of non-fatal offences.
