Like so many teenagers Katy didn’t have a definite career in
mind when she was in school.
“I went into the sixth form with the intention of going to
university,” said Katy, and with that the possibility of becoming a
teacher, but on reflection decided it was not for me. I didn’t
really relish the though of the time at university, but wanted to
get out and work.
“At that time I hadn’t really given a career law a thought. It
was my History teacher who first suggested that being a lawyer
might be a good career for me.
“I thought about this and leaving school, I quite fancied being
a legal secretary and so decided to get a qualification. It was my
local college in Solihull that suggested that I did the CILEx
course for a Legal Secretary qualification.
“I also wanted a job,” she says, “so sent my CV around to a
number of law firms in the Birmingham area. About a month
into my course, I started with Anthony Collins as a junior while I
trained, and have been with them ever since. I am now working in
the Dispute Resolution department for one of the Partners.
“I am about to start my CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in
Law and Practice, which is equivalent to A-level law and is the
first step in becoming a Legal Executive lawyer. It will take me
about two years study, and I chose to lean by distance leaning
through the ILEX Tutorial College. I chose the Tutorial College to
study through rather than a local college as I like the flexibility
distance learning gives me to fit in my studies around my life and
work, but also for the fact that there are still tutors I can
contact and talk to as well.
“I really enjoy the work in dispute resolution and find law
fascinating,” Katy says. “The partner I work for has been very
supportive of my decision to go on to train to be legal executive
lawyer and is very helpful. The firm has also been really great
about encouraging me to train, and even help with some of the
course fees. I am also lucky that there is as there are a number of
legal executives in the firm and a good CILEx network, so I have
plenty of opportunity to draw on the experience of other CILEx
members who are further on in their training than I am.
“I know I have a long way to go, but I am really looking forward
to the day that I qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive
lawyer.”
