Approved list of Exemptions

CILEx has recognised a number of qualifications for exemption purposes.

If you have completed a Legal Practice Course (LPC), a Bar Vocational Course (BVC) or a Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) you can use this form to apply for full exemption from the CILEx qualifications to become a Graduate Member of CILEx. For further details please contact our Membership Department.

If you have any of the other qualifications listed below, which you completed within the last 7 years, you should use this form as part of your application for exemption.

(Please note: students claiming an exemption against any of these 3 units will have to demonstrate that all units of the A Level specification for that specific subject have been successfully completed)

City & Guilds/CILEx Level 2 Vocational Paralegal Studies Certificate Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice

OR

Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

Unit 1 - Introduction to Law and Practice

Note: Students must have achieved an overall Distinction in three modules (which must include the two core modules The Legal Environment (Unit 1) and Legal Principles (Unit 2) in the City & Guilds/CILEx Level 2 Vocational Paralegal Studies Certificate.

Qualifying Law Degree Graduate Fast Track Diploma*

If you hold a qualifying law degree awarded within the last seven years you can apply for exemption from the entire CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and the Law units from the Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice.

For law graduates (with a qualifying law degree) seeking to use the Graduate Fast Track Diploma to gain access to membership of CILEx, it is a requirement that at least one of the Practice units attempted is in an area of law that they can demonstrate was a constituent part of their Law degree.

Common Professional Examination  (CPE), Graduate Diploma in Law  (GDL) or Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PgDL) Graduate Fast Track Diploma*

If you hold a CPE/GDL/PgDL awarded within the last seven years you can apply for exemption from the entire CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and the Law units from the Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice.

For students with a CPE/GDL/PgDL seeking to use the Graduate Fast Track Diploma to gain access to membership of CILEx, it is a requirement that at least one of the Practice units attempted is in an area of law that they can demonstrate was a constituent part of their qualification.

Legal Practice Course (LPC)  

If you have completed a Qualifying Law Degree and the LPC you can apply for full exemption from the CILEx qualifications and apply to become a Graduate Member of CILEx. Please contact our Membership Department for further details.

Bar Vocational Course (BVC) / Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)  

If you have a Qualifying Law Degree and a BVC / BPTC you can apply for full exemption from the CILEx qualifications and apply to become a Graduate Member of CILEx. Please contact our Membership Department for further details.

Qualifications not listed (including non- qualifying law degrees) Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice

OR

Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

OR

Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice,  Level 6 Certificate in Law or Graduate Fast Track Diploma*                              

Qualifications in Law and/or Practice completed in the last seven years at an equivalent or higher level and with a substantially similar content to CILEx unit/s will be considered for exemption. A full syllabus transcript showing coverage of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria contained in the CILEx unit/s must be provided with the exemption application.

Initial exemption administration fee of £100. Only when CILEx confirms which exemptions you can apply for will you be required to pay £44.00 for each Level 3 unit exemption. Exemptions from Level 6 subjects will be charged at £82.00 per unit.

 

* to complete the Graduate Fast-Track Diploma students need to complete two CILEx Level 6 Practice units and the CILEx Level 6 Client Care Skills. For students with a qualifying law degree /CPE/GDL/PgDL seeking to use the Graduate Fast Track Diploma to gain access to membership of CILEx, it is a requirement that at least one of the Practice units attempted is in an area of law that they can demonstrate was a constituent part of their qualification.
