Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is defined
as:
'The systematic maintenance, improvement and extension
of the professional and legal skills, and personal qualities,
necessary for the execution of professional and legal duties: and
compliance with the standards required by the Institute
throughout the Associate Member's, Graduate Member's,
Associate Prosecutor's or Fellow's working
life.'
CPD was introduced in line with the best practices of
professional bodies. It accords with the Lord Chancellor's Advisory
Committee's report which concluded that ' the public interest
requires greater commitment by the legal profession as a whole to
regular CPD throughout the career of every lawyer'. CPD is often
referred to as 'lifelong learning'.
2009 CPD Online Recording - now
available
All members required to submit CPD please note
that the Institute has introduced an online system
for recording your CPD activities. This means using the technology
we already have in a smarter and more efficient way, so no more
paper log books and postage, which will have the added benefit of
containing costs. The recording system is now available here through My
ILEX a service which hopefully you are familiar
with.
For the past number of years the CPD updates
have been provided free by ITC, which has been a very popular way
to catch up on your CPD hours. The escalation of internal and
external costs associated with producing updates means that, and
with much regret, we can no longer absorb these costs and that from
this year we will have to make a charge for these. We wanted to
flag this up now so that you are aware of this.
There are some exciting developments in the
way you will be able to achieve your CPD hours which we will
communicate in our ILEX journals.
