Cornwall Branch

Cornwall Branch of ILEX is approaching its first birthday.   The inaugural meeting took place in September 2009 when the following formed a committee: Lesley Kendall, Ayesha Lovell, Rebecca Moore, Jody Pender and Gaynor Perry.   Recently, the committee has been assisted by Alison Hubbard.

In a very short time, mainly thanks to Ayesha’s powers of negotiation and persuasion, the committee was able to formally launch the Branch at a Dinner Dance with Graduation Ceremony in Falmouth in November 2009.

In 2010 it has organised the following: Meet and Greet sessions in Liskeard (January) and Truro (February), followed by Archery outside Newquay (February), Bingo in St Austell (March) , Stress Management Seminar at Carnon Downs (June), entered a team into an “It’s a Knockout” Competition in Newquay (July) – Ayesha, Jody and Alison were joined by Johanna Heane, Doug Sidebottom and Jim Hilton, a quiz in Truro (September) and the masked Graduation Dinner Dance Ball in October in Newquay.

As the “Stress Management Seminar” (excluding the Dance) was the best attended event (and very good value at £5 for 1 CPD point) the committee is looking to arrange a similar event in 2011 on “Assertiveness Training”.  The seminar commenced with a speaker from Pentreath, a Mental health charity, followed by practical advice from Beverley Brooks of Breathing Space on benefits of massage to relieve the symptoms of stress and Victoria Whitney of Illuminated Training, for mental strategies to cope with stress.  Information was given on the Law Care Service to assist lawyers suffering from stress and other problems affecting ability to work effectively.   Thanks to Ayesha there was a goody bag from Speiza Organics.  The evening was rounded off with a buffet, which gave members an opportunity to mix and get to know each other.

The Committee has written to the local colleges offering to come and talk to the September intake of students and to mid-Cornwall secondary schools offering to attend Careers Fairs.   It is hoped that the former will lead to new members joining and the committee would like to organise study groups and support from qualified/practising members to students.

Able and enthusiastic as the committee is, it lacks a crystal ball or telepathic powers.  Therefore, please contact us to let us know what you want the branch to do.    Those who have attended the events have had great fun and enjoyed meeting colleagues.

Johanna Heane receives the committee’s thanks for the member attending most events although in moving firms she overlooked attending the Stress management seminar.

The committee wishes to express its thanks to Ayesha Lovell for her energy, organisational and artistic skills used to benefit the Branch in its first year.   Regretfully she is returning to her Exeter home.   Cornwall’s loss will be Devon’s gain but she promises to attend the October Masked Ball in all her finery.

Please renew your membership or, if you have not already done so, join for 2011.  The AGM will be held in January 2011 so please come along and, even if you do not want to stand for election for the committee, cast your vote for those who do (willing or coerced).

Prospective Branches

Cotswolds

It is proposed to form an ILEX branch in the Cotswolds area and we would like interested ILEX members to e-mail their details to Heather Wannell at Heather@alisonfielden.co.uk so that a database can be built up. A preliminary social event will then be organised, which will provide members with an opportunity to discuss the potential for a branch.

Herefordshire

It is proposed to form an ILEX branch in this area, the aim being: to raise the profile of legal executives in Herefordshire and the surrounding areas; to provide training and CPD opportunities; to facilitate networking; to develop links with other ILEX branches and legal groups in the region; and not forgetting the opportunity for a few good social events as well!

We hope to arrange an informal meeting to discuss the proposed Herefordshire branch in the spring. To register your interest, or for further information, please contact Samantha Smith at ilexherefordshire@yahoo.co.uk or 01432 260 657. You can also contact Anne-Marie Dhillon, ILEX regional liaison officer, at adhillon@ilex.org.uk  or 01922 429 720.

No Branch in your area?

Would you like to help raise the profile of Legal Executives and meet people in a similar job to yourself?  Perhaps you would be willing to start a branch in your region or become part of the committee?

For more information please contact John Burns, Head of Membership, ILEX at jburns@ilex.org.uk
