Rights of Audience qualification
ILEX members may qualify as Legal Executive Advocates, this
enables them to exercise greater rights of audience. Details
of the qualification structure and the rights that are available
can be found here.
IPS is responsible, as the regulatory body, for assessing
whether members meet the standards expected of them to enrol on the
qualification scheme. The assessment is conducted when the
member applies for a Certificate of Eligibility.
IPS is also responsible for accrediting course providers seeking
to deliver advocacy skills courses. The accreditation process
involves an assessment to ensure that courses will meet the course
outcomes and assessment criteria under the scheme. IPS
ensures that standards continue to be met by course providers
through monitoring arrangements conducted by moderation of
assessments and inspection of course provision.
Successful advocates are awarded Advocacy Certificates
authorising them to practise as Legal Executive Advocates in the
practice area in which they hold a certificate. IPS is
responsible for ensuring that Advocates keep their skills up to
date through regular CPD.
The standards of conduct that Legal Executive Advocates must
meet are set out in the advocacy code of conduct. The Code is
contained in the Rights of Audience Conduct Rules which can be
found here.
