Directory - Specifying Search Criteria
A number of facilities are available
which allow you to define search crtieria with the aim of making
the search "narrower" and thereby reduce the number of results
returned by the search. These are described in the sections
below and include;
Entering of search text
Handling of special characters and
alternative spellings
Surname, employer and location radio
buttons
Specialisation
Practising Rights
Retired Fellows
Surname A-Z index
The CLEAR button can be used at any time to
reset the search criteria. This removes any search text, resets the
Radio Buttons, Specialisation and Surname A-Z to the default
setting.
Go to the next section Performing the Search or return to the introduction.
Entering search text
If you are searching for Legal
Executive Lawyers by surname, employer name or location,
enter the search text in the box provided. Use
the radio buttons to indicate whether to match this
text against either surname,
employer, or location.
- The search term must be a minimum of 3 characters long eg "sm"
is not accepted, "jon" is accepted.
- Case insensitive eg entering search term as “Lewis” or “lEwIS”
will produce the same results.
- All entries that contain
the search term will match eg a search term “smith”
will match “Goldsmith” and “Smith”
- Where multiple terms are entered the entire
string of text is used to match against the database eg the search
text "silver smi" will match entries for "Silver Smith" or "Silver
Smithson" but not "Silverman Smith"

Special characters and alternate
spelling in search text
If the surname, employer name or location
contain special characters eg "&",
"-" or ".", or could have
alternative spellings eg “O’Donnell” or "Finley-Brown" or “Grime
& Sleeper Solicitors” or “St. Austell”, consider
simplifying the search term entered eg “donnell”, "finley", “grime”
or “austell” to improve the likelihood of a match.

Radio Buttons (Surname, Employer,
Location)
These buttons allow you to control
which data elements of the Directory you wish to search
against. The buttons are also used, with or without a
search term, to control the order in which the results are
displayed.
By Surname
(default match) - will match the search text against the
surname, and/or to present the results in order
of surname and then by initial(s) eg "Jones, DJ" will be presented
before "Jones, H"
Use Employer to
match against the name of Employer stored on the database, and/or
present the results in order of Employer name and
then by Surname/initial(s) ie all Legal Executive Lawyers
working for the same employer should be
listed together.
Use Location to
match against town and county address information stored on the
database, and/or to present the results in order of
Location and then by Surname/initial(s) ie all Legal Executive
Lawyers working in the same town/county should be listed
together.

Specialisation
To narrow down your search you can
also search for Legal Executive Lawyers who have
told ILEX that they specialise in a particular area of
law. Use the drop-down list provided to
select the area of Specialisation required. By default the
service will include "All" specialisations.
The search results will be
displayed in a sequence determined by the radio button setting
above.

Practicing Rights
To narrow down your search you can also
search for Legal Executive Lawyers who have been
granted specific Practising Rights and hold a current Practising
Certificate. Use the drop-down list provided to select
the Practising Right of interest. By default the service
will include "All" rights.
The search results will be
displayed in a sequence determined by the radio button setting
above

Retired Fellows
By default the Legal Executives Directory
only presents currently practising Legal Executive
Lawyers. If required you may also search for
retired Legal Executive Lawyers who have remained
a Fellow of ILEX. The Directory cannot
search for, and cannot display details relating
to, retired Fellows using any employment
(including location), specialism or practising rights criteria.
Search can only take place based on the
individuals surname. To include retired fellows in your
search tick the "Include Retired Fellows" tick-box.

Surname A-Z
This can be used to browse the
Directory based on the first letter of the Surname or to narrow the
search to those Surname entries within the database eg by selecting
the letter "M" any search text entered or
specialisation selected will be matched against a
smaller subset of the database.
Use "All"
(default setting) to reset the A-Z index so search matches against
all entries.
